About us

The Orff Schulwerk Association of NSW was established in 1972 to promote Creative Music Education. Over the past 30 years the association has grown steadily and blossomed into a highly valued professional association providing quality inservice opportunities to Music Educators in NSW. The association has strong links to the National body, Australian Council of Orff Schulwerk (ANCOS), enabling members to benefit from the services provided by international and other state associations.

 A variety of inservice opportunities are provided by the association. Local workshops, State and National conferences, one week Levels courses, access to overseas clinicians, information about national and international courses and published resources to name few. We value our members highly and if you are interested in joining the association the Orff Schulwerk Association of NSW would welcome your membership as we consider our association to be ''good value for money". The following is a list of some of the benefits of being a member:

  • Membership of the NSW Association and regular bulletins spread throughout the year;
  • Membership of the Australian association ANCOS and copies of the MUSICWORKS journal;
  • Immediate notification of courses, workshop, conferences and professional opportunities;
  • A reduction in fees for courses, workshops and conferences run by the state and national associations;
  • Information about new resources and their availability;
  • Membership of the Professional Teachers' Council and input into educational policy making at State and National level;
  • Opportunities for professional development, leading to career advancement;
  • Bi-annual national conferences in different states around Australia;
  • Links with a supportive network of music teachers across the state and affiliation with Orff associations and music teachers all over the world;
  • Opportunity to make submissions on issues in Music to bodies like the Board of Studies and the Department of School Education and the Government;
  • Voting rights at the Annual General Meeting.

Consideration regarding payment of membership fees, will be gladly given to those who have legitimate hardship upon application to the Association. There is also a specially reduced price for students and non-wage earning members.

About Orff Schulwerk

A BRIEF EXPOSITION OF ORFF SCHULWERK

Orff Schulwerk is an approach to creative music appreciation developed in the first half of the twentieth century by the German composer and educator, Carl Orff and his colleague, Gunild Keetman. Having spread to many countries around the world, it has been developed and adapted by Australian music educators to reflect contemporary Australian culture. The Orff Approach is an educative process, which can be used with participants of all ages and abilities. It explores all aspects and relationships of rhythm, pitch and harmony through language, singing, movement and instrumental performance. Elementary techniques such as imitation, echo, ostinato and cannon are utilised in the Orff Approach. Improvisation is a fundamental part of the process.

FEATURES OF ORFF SCHULWERK

Through the Orff Approach, music becomes an activity in which everyone, regardless of their level of competency, can actively participate. The Approach is consistent with the Key Learning Areas (KLAs) and can be incorporated freely into any K-12 music curriculum.

Orff Schulwerk provides a sound and experiential basis upon which theoretical and practical musicianship can be built, whilst also providing ongoing music experiences which can be developed to considerable depth and complexity.

Many Orff Schulwerk activities exercise and reinforce skills in the areas of coordination, rhythmic senses, language and development and social interaction. All of which contribute to the all-round intellectual and social development of the individual.
