Sound waves evoking lifelong learning

14th Biennial Australian National Conference of Orff Schulwerk January 8 - 13 2006

Workshop Robyn Staveley and David Spurgeon

Robyn Staveley and David Spurgeon have worked together in the Bachelor of Dance program at NSW University for seven years on a subject called "Music for the Dancer". David was attracted to the Orff approach for its active learning process, very necessary for kinaesthetic learners such as dancers, and Robyn was attracted to seeing the movement response when teaching music to dancers. Their collaboration and team teaching approach has resulted in a very exciting program exploring musical concepts and skills through movement, using repertoire of many different styles and types, including unusual and mixed metres, contemporary and experimental music and Australian repertoire.

"Dance to Listen To ; Music To Watch"

Session Abstract

This paper is an investigation into the relationship between Dance
and Music in the works of the Belgian Choreographer, Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker with particular reference to her use of Steve Reich, Mozart and Joan Baez. The paper proposes that ATK evidences a deep and rich relationship between the 2 art forms that makes experiencing her works an aural and visual treat and examining them a satisfying work of detection!
