Stephen Abernethy is the Head of Music at Taipei American School, a K-12 school serving the expatriate community in Taipei, Taiwan. At TAS, Stephen teaches 3rd and 4th grade Orff, Middle School Bands and is musical director of the High School Wind Ensemble. In his international teaching career he has been a delegate at Australian and US National Orff Conferences, Summer Schools at the Orff Institute in Salzburg, the Jazz course with Doug Goodkin at the San Francisco School, and in mid 2004 attended a conference in ‘Teaching East Asian Music in the Elementary school’ at Indiana University, Bloomington. A Cook-Orff with East-Asia ‘Sources and Spices’ Session Abstract This session with present lesson ideas developed in the upper-primary classroom using source materials from China and the Bunun Aboriginal tribe of Taiwan. Traditional and contemporary musical examples and song games will provide the foundations for the development of musical ideas using the Orff process in these sessions. |
