Wolfgang Stange

Wolfgang Stange is AMICI ’ s founder, director and principal choreographer.

Born in Berlin, but resident in the UK for the past 37 years. Stange is known internationally for his teaching methods which stress the need to share and ackknowledge each other’s abilities, whether disabled or not. Profoundly influenced by Hilde Holger, his first dance teacher, he went on to further train at The London School of Contemporary Dance.

His widely acclaimed choreographies include; I am not yet Dead , The Dream , Rückblick , Silence , Hungover in Hyde Park , Passage to Sanity? , Fragments of Flight and Incidents in the Life of. . . . In 1990 he won the Digital Dance Award for Production and in 1993 he won the Vaslav Nijinsky award from the Polish Artists Agency for his choreography of The Journey ( an award rarely given outside of Poland) . In 1996 he choreographed Hilde as a celebration of his first dance teacher’s life.

Wolfgang is much in demand as a teacher and innovative workshop leader in Japan, America and Sri Lanka and throughout Europe. He has been a contributer to the Salzburg summer course since 1987. In 1998 he helped to set up the . rst integrated Theatre Company in Sri Lanka, integrating Tamil refugees with Sinhalese soldiers and people born with a disability from all ethnic backgrounds. He is the co director of this company and has helped to create four full length productions.

In 2000, for AMICI ’ s 20th anniversary production, 20/20, he collaborated with the script writer Julia Pascal, the puppeteer and theatre director Julian Crouch, the composer Billy Cowie and the singer Barb Jungr. together with the New London orchestra. This work was performed in London and Berlin. Time Step in 2002 acclaimed the 82 year old Marjorie Crawford a former resident of Australia in the title role.

For the 25th anniversary production in 2005, AMICI teamed up with the Impropable Theatre Company. Wolfgang is working in Sri Lanka in March 2005 with the victims of the 26th December 2004 Tsunami.
